Dussehra special 

I will tell you stories of Dussehra 

Dussehra is a festival signifying good over evil. 

It is also called Vijaya dashami 

It has an auspicious time in which it is said that the work done in that time never fails. 

Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of Ashwin month's Shukla paksha.

On this day 2 demons were killed .

One Rawan and it is well known that lord Ram killed Rawan. 

Another was mahishasura who was killed by mata durga.

About Rawan 

Rawan was the son of maha rishi vishrava and kaikesi ( the demoness)

He was first a great devotee of lord shiva. 

He wanted to take lord shiva to his residence so he tried every way and at last he took atmalinga with him lord Shiva warned him not to put it on ground as it will never detach to a place once it touched ground. 

Every god was distressed as they cannot win from ravana in matters of power and if he took atmalinga to Lanka he would not get defeated by lord ravan so lord 

Ganesha took the responsibility and with his wits he put atmalinga on the ground.

After these incidents he became the enemy of gods and he won many battles against gods.

Ravana to avenge lord Ram for the insult of his sister, he abducted Devi Sita when they were in exile. 

To save Sita and the world from a demon lord Ram stood against Ravana.

Lord Rama sent many peace and warning messages but Ravan was drowned in his arrogance and he declined all.

When his own brother Vibhishana tried to make him understand the power of Lord Rama and the mistake he had made by abducting Devi Sita, Rawan kicked his brother and disowned him .

Vibhishana then went to Lord Rama and he accepted him wholeheartedly.

His brother Kumbhkaran also tried to convince him to give Sita back to Lord Rama but he didn't support Rama and said that he knows he will die but he will not run from his duty of being a brother.

In battle Meghnath, also called Indrajeet, was killed with lord Laxmana.

His brother Kumbhkaran was slayed by lord Rama.

On the last day Ravan also died on the battlefield during the fierce battle between lord Rama and him .

At his last breath he surrendered himself, identifying that lord Rama was no one other than lord Narayana.

This battle however showed that arrogance can destroy the most wise person also .

Also Shri Ram didn't took over the Lanka but he returned Lanka to vibhishana.

About mahishasur:

He was a demon who had a boon that he would not be facing any danger from any male of any species as he considered female very powerless creatures he didn't fear from them.

On the other hand Mata Parvati on the call of great sage Katyayan incarnated as his daughter katyayani.

Devi katyayani was a very soft hearted, kind and loving person.

After getting boon, mahishasur attacked heaven and won every god tried to defeat him in every way at last when they got to know that only a woman can kill him they remember about Devi parvathi who is now fully grown woman in Devi katyayani incarnation.

He also killed and harmed saints, children and women.

All gods prayed to Devi katyayani to save her innocent children from mahishasur and Devi blessed them and told them to give warnings to mahishasur and introduce him to her existence.

As all gods did he being a demon thought how can a lady be powerful and he told his 2 asuras to keep the marriage proposal of both of them in front of Devi katyayani.

In meanwhile gods gave her their weapons she took all weapons in her 8 hands and took the form of Devi vindhya vasini and went on the Vindhyachal mountain to meditate.

When asuras of mahishasur reached there they heard a sweet voice chanting om namah shivaya they went near and saw a lady whose beauty was beyond words and imagination. 

They called Devi and told her that demon king mahishasura has sent a marriage proposal. 

Devi katyayani calmly said that she will marry who will win with her in battle.

When Mahishasur heard the news he marched to vindhyachal with his demon army.

When he reached his destination he saw a beautiful weather changing into a dangerous one. Sky was red by now, wolves were crying and many inauspicious signs were given to him by a kind hearted goddess to warn him but he was a demon he was unable to understand it .

At last when he saw Devi katyayani in the form of Devi vindhya vasini mounted on a lion. He was mesmerized by her beauty. She had a divine aura. Her complexion was fair and she was wearing a red sari with many jewelleries which were adorning her already beautiful body. She was looking pure beauty.

He laid his lustful eyes on her which made her angry .

She told him that when a son lays bad intention on his own mother that is above the level which one can bear 

She fought with mahishasura and his army alone.

Battle continued for 9 days and on the tenth day when the time of his death came she slayed him when he was in the form of half bull and half human.

When she slayed him she showed the devi durga form with 8 hands and fierce expression. 

After slaying mahishasura she was also called Mata mahishasur mardini.

Even after slaying mahishasura her anger didn't calm. She was angry and she started the tandav. By that tandav nature was getting affected as she was the nature herself and if she continues this dance earth would me doomed before doomsday.

Then gods reached Lord Narayana and he went to earth with every other god and Trinity. Also they all praised Devi katyayani by singing a prayer mahishasura mardini stotram.

She calmed himself hearing the call of her children. 

She proved it that every time good will win over bad and a mother can turn fierce if you will harm his children.

Also she showed that she is power and no woman is powerless.

A fact says that Devi parvati and Lord Narayana were incarnated from the same elements so they slayed asura on one day but in different years or yugas and many more incidents happened like this.
